Jessica ZhuJessica Zhu (violin)

NCE Outstanding Young Artist Competition Second Prize Winner Jessica Zhu, age 17 is a senior at Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School and studies violin with Jorge Orozco. She currently serves as co-concertmaster in Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras’ Philharmonic. For three consecutive years starting in 2018, she was accepted to the Maryland Junior All-State Ensemble, serving as concertmaster in 2020. In 2020 and 2021, she qualified for the finals of the Landon School Concerto Competition and was given the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Landon Symphonette. Recently, with the La Vida String Quartet, she was awarded second prize in the ninth annual Misbin Family Memorial Chamber Music Competition, second prize in the Lancaster International Chamber Music Competition, and Grand Prize in the 2022 Young Musicians Inspiring Change International Competition.

Jessica was accepted to the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Solo Violin Workshop for the 2020 and 2021 summer seasons and has also attended other programs including the Douro Strings Academy in Vila Real, Portugal, and Sounding Point Academy. She currently volunteers at the Tacy Foundation, where she performs at various assisted living facilities and hospitals, including the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health.

Outside of playing the violin, Jessica enjoys exploring state parks with her family and playing Mancala.
